Strange men
Strange men make war, dry out the veins of children while their hearts are still beating, explode the lap of mothers and grandmothers over the heads of those who remain, blind fathers and countries, do not want belief, only the slow rot of doubt eating everything from within, skin burning under a rain of versions and missiles, all words wounded dragging themselves to the fingertips asking for help. What do they want? Money? Power? But is there not another way of having? A million and a half years since Homo Erectus and still no invention for profiting from joy? Not the false happiness of Coke’s advertising, but the real one, that which blooms quietly from small things, seeing a dog’s tail beating the air when it plays with a little creature, passing the bowl to someone you love at lunch, receiving news that a distant friend will stay in town for a few days, finding the exact sentence in the book your hand happened to reach. Does all of this amount to almost nothing? If money is a representation of value, then answer me, why does death sell more than life? Such madness scratches at the temples, digs a dark hole that turns the brain inside out. Terrorists without votes steal trucks, terrorists with votes buy tanks. Perhaps the only way to continue is to become obsessive, to line the walls with invented hieroglyphs and run away from home leaving behind a story that future astronauts will find buried under catastrophe, a story with princes, princesses and good witches in a kingdom where philosophers are nobility and warriors and their discoveries become celebration, not fire, because in reality monsters still rule the palaces, Lombrosian faces unmoving while they steal the present and the future of others. I promised you I would not speak of horrors anymore, that I would turn my face away from any wrongdoing, that I would live a balanced life among many laughs, I know, but there is so much strangeness it hits me like a tank and I feel the shots knocking down my certainties one by one, collapsing, pale, knees striking the earth in a dry cascade of cracks. I don’t know. How do those who send a child to war endure it? How do those who say goodbye to a brother, a husband, survive? How does one wander among corpses and still hold light inside the chest? In these hours I shrink, I ask the Love of immemorial times to come to our aid and find a way to reach the men of stone hearts.

Nestas horas me encolho.

Reminds me that there’s sanity still.
Beautiful.
